Description

Holidays with family can be like an awful and protracted dinner with your complicated uncle on one hand and challenging aunty on the other. Assign someone to come up with a daily schedule of optional activities so everyone can choose what they want to do and no time is wasted negotiating. They’ve given us a window into their escapades in the hit Netflix show, Travels With My Father, and in this brilliantly funny book they’ve pooled their advice for fellow travellers. I have come across Michael before, on chat shows mainly, and am familiar with his persona, the traditional conservative, whose fantasy dinner party would include Thatcher's cabinet, a diehard Brexit supporter, a product of his generation and class, a show biz agent to the stars, but I knew less about Hilary, here she is a revelation, coming across as truly hilarious, a mother of three children, at the heart of their family.

Let it go if someone doesn’t want to try your favorite yoga pose or drink your concoction to cure their stuffy nose. Especially the outtakes at the end - I’m so glad they included those outtakes and tangents because they were hilarious! Was expecting this to be more original than it turned out to be, which is a shame as Jack and Michael have the potential to be funny, but sadly this book felt like a quick cash grab from the popularity of their last book. Whether you've watched the show or not, this book is just as funny and paints a terrific picture of the pros and pitfalls of travelling with your parents, or other close family members. Although it's not the type of book I normally read, it was enjoyable and definitely worth five stars!

Finished this in a day whilst doing a bit of long driving, can honestly say I was in absolute stitches! Holidays with family should be fun, but a clash of conflicting opinions can result in more stress than enjoyment. It’s a chance to spend quality time together but that doesn’t mean you have to spend every moment together.

The books featured on this site are aimed primarily at readers aged 13 or above and therefore you must be 13 years or over to sign up to our newsletter. Written by Jack Whitehall, this is a blend of family memoir, travelogue, and advice on how to get through the trauma that are family holidays. I recommend keeping a copy of this book to hand to dip into every time you dive into the treacherous waters of travelling with relatives. Comedian Jack Whitehall, along with his parents Hilary and Michael, share some, let's say, interesting insights in this laugh-a-minute guide to travelling with those closest to you: your family. If there is a history of family drama ensuing by the third day, try playing a private game of “dysfunctional family bingo.Alert your guests to standing appointments that you will attend, such as your choir practice, so they can plan accordingly. Let everyone know ahead of time that you take your children to the park after lunch every day or that the planned holiday movie isn’t appropriate for your kids. All the topics that you usually avoid rear their heads until the only relief you can possibly find is at the end of a cigarette outside the restaurant. Indeed they've been allowing us a window to their escapades for the past five years in the hit Netflix show 'Travels with my Father', and in this hilarious book they have now decided to pool their advice for fellow travelers.
