A torch worth having on the hill should be at least splash proof, but the fully waterproof Storm 500-R goes a lot further. It’s not just the volume of functions that stands out, but how genuinely useful they are, once you know how to use them. One of the best features on this light is that it can be locked in the off mode by simply holding down the on/off switch. The various light colours are good options if you need them however I can’t say I ever really need anything but standard white. com/Imagestorage/imagesSynchro/0/0/8d2020f76777943d18c71aaebc8fb5f3f53a1feb_H21BDIAACC170554_BDIA0430433_0.

The Black Diamond Storm 400 also has three different colored night vision modes and peripheral white lighting for close-range activities like carefully re-racking for the final summit pitch in the dark. Thanks to its adjustment system, it offers three night vision modes in different colors, as well as a short-door white light. With its soft and not-too-dazzling quality, flood mode gives a very broad field of vision, but very little reach, so you're lighting up your immediate surroundings clearly while not seeing much beyond that bubble. The Storm 400 also has three different colored night vision modes and peripheral white lighting for close-range activities like carefully re-racking for the final summit pitch in the dark. The Storm 400 Headtorch is engineered for epics in all conditions, featuring a robust waterproof/dustproof housing and 400 lumens of bright light. The unit is almost like your own personal floodlight and for better or worse I’ve had complaints from people I’m blinding them with it! Alternatively, the dual fuel Storm 450 and Spot 400 offer the flexibility of use with AAA batteries or a BD battery pack, making them a good choice for travelling, multi-day trips or expeditions. I've been stuck in red LED mode for three minutes before trying all kinds of combinations until I got lucky and the main light turned back on. Whatever the setting was when it was last on, is retained when you turn it off, for the next time you turn it on.

The Storm today is solid, strong, and a terrific choice for use backcountry, or just around the house. I strongly suggest sitting down for five minutes at home and getting the hang of it before you head for the hills!Comfort is adequate, but not as good as a lamp that weighs half as much simply due to the tightness required in the band to keep this heavy light secured to your forehead. The Storm 400's PowerTap Technology enables you to quickly and easily access maximum brightness with the touch of a finger. Many torches are noticeably affected by the cold, so its sub-zero performance should make this model an attractive choice for winter mountaineers. It’s an expedition essential, but not entirely necessary for straightforward, dark descents after a long day on the hills or as a convenient ‘grab and go’ light when retreating to the van for the evening. The Black Diamond Storm is a robust and full-featured headlamp that offers a bright and wide beam, a fully waterproof enclosure, and excellent optics for both close proximity flood and long-distance spot lighting.

We consider the Storm's additional performance functionality to be beneficial, and we consider the Storm to offer better bang for the buck than the Spot.Another advantage of the quick tap is that you can use it to help save battery life, by having the torch set at a lower output and then only tapping to full-distance for brief periods when you really need to pick out your route far ahead. Where it gets tricky is accessing advanced features, and it has a lot of advanced features, which are all controlled from the same one button UI.
